Aztreonam (Azactam^¢ç) Therapy for Complicated Urinary Tract Infections in Hospitalized Patients



Abstract
Aztreonam (Azactam¢ç) was administered to a total of 20 hospital patients with complicated urinary tract infections.
The 20 patients received I gm of aztreonam intramuscularly or intravenously twice daily for 5-15 days.
All 20 patients had at least one underlying urologic complication. Obstructive uropathy was the primary complication; Caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy in 5 patients, urethral stricture in 5, stone in 4 and hydronephrosis in 3. 15 of the 20 patients underwent a surgical procedure during aztreonam therapy.
Out of the 20 patients, 15 were infected with G(-) bacilli, 3 with G(+) cocci and 2 with unknown organisms.
Bacteriologic cure was achieved in 18 of 20 patients in these aztreonam therapy. Clinical excellent effects were observed in 13 patients, good effects in 5 and ineffective in 2. Total clinical therapeutic effects were obtained in 18 out of the 20 patients, giving rate of 90%.
Minimal and transient adverse reaction occurred with these dosages.
